Senior quarterback Joey Jones scored on a 23-yard run with 30 seconds left in the first
half to help Greeley West defeat Greeley Central 28-10 Monday at West.
West took control of the first half and scored four times. Jones scored the first points of
the game on a 10-yard run with West’s possession of the game. The extra point made it 7-0.
In the second quarter, West scored three touchdowns. West had the ball at the 50-yard
line when Jones threw a short pass over the middle to senior receiver Jim Sherman, who ran the
ball in for a 50-yard touchdown. The extra point was good and the score now 14-0.
After Sherman’s touchdown, West kicked off and central fumbled the ball. Bill Smith
tried to catch the kickoff at the 20-yard line, but the ball got away from him. West senior Zeke
Evans recovered the ball at the 15-yard line. Jones threw a pass that Sherman caught in the end
zone on the next play, bringing the score to 21-0 with the extra point. The score was 28-0 in
favor of West at halftime.
“Sherman and Jones really looked great,” West coach Bob Browning said. “ I was glad to
see them do well in their final game.”
Browning took out his starters after halftime and put in the second team.
“I thought we looked great. The starters worked hard. Everybody worked hard,”
Browning said. “ I wanted to give some of the guys who hadn’t played a lot a chance.”
In the second half, Central scored twice. Junior Brent Mcneely scored a field goal in the
third quarter, bringing the score to 27-3. Sophomore running back Jack Chandler ran the ball in
from the 5 to score a touchdown. The extra point made it 28-10.
“I’m so proud of our team,” Jones said. “ This was a great way to go out.”
It was the final game of the season for both teams. Greeley West’s record is 9-2, and
Central is 5-6.
